Example Lab and fixed peer grading checklist are up on the website. Don't forget to sign up for turnitin.com!! See www.bloust/marostica for more details

Website

Hi Chemistry Studs!

I'm trying to upload the example lab on the website but the website is down at the moment. I am going to forward those of you who have sent me email addresses the practice lab. If you send me an email I can add you to the list. You could also try to get it from a friend who received the email. "Yeeees, I love technology"...

Updates

I hope everyone is having a relaxing summer :-)

If you received an "I" on your report card, it is because you did not turn in your text book (SL) or for HLA it is because you did not renew it OR you did not renew your study guide with me. Administration has your grades so as soon as you take care of your textbook obligations, your transcript will be changed.

Also, don't forget that for HL you need to read a non-fiction science book over the summer. You can get the book approved from me if it is not on the list.

Don't forget to sign up for the Summer Trip to Argentina and Brazil. We already have some students signed up! Don't miss this fabulous opportunity. Email me with any questions.

Happy Summer!!! Woooooohoooo

Sky diving was awesome :-)

SL Scientist of the Month

For SL only
Just as a reminder: if you haven't signed up for a scientist, you are not guaranteed approval. At this time, all of the male scientist spots have been taken. If you have not signed up, you need to check with me before you start your project to make sure your scientist is appropriate.

Group 4 Project Symposium

Date: Wednesday, April 29th
Location: RMHS Library
Time: 6:00-7:00pm

Every group needs to have a presentation prepared on TWO medias. You will need a powerpoint presentation as well as a poster. We will present the powerpoints from 6:00-6:30pm and then stand by your posters and answer questions from 6:30-7:00pm. The same information should be presented on both medias.

The presentation will be due IN CLASS on Wednesday, April 22. During lunch, we will do a practice run through. This will be graded. You must turn in your presentation on a flash drive on the 22nd in class so that I can load it onto my computer in preperation for the lunch time run through. Failure to have this ready will result in a severe drop in your grade. NO EXCUSES. Have it ready the day before to avoid penalties. You are welcome to turn it in early.

Food Journal Project due dates

Your first week of Journals will be due on Friday, March 6th. I will expect to have completed journals for Friday, Feb 27 through Thursday March 5th. These will receive a stamp if completed and then returned to you that day. If you do not have COMPLETED journals for ALL 7 days, you WILL NOT receive a stamp, resulting in a loss of points on your final grade.
Journals will be collected on:
March 6 for journal entries 2/27-3/5
March 13 for journal entries 3/6-3/12
March 20 for journal entries 3/13-3/19

Completed journal (2/27-3/26) is due on Friday, March 27.
Reflective Summary is due on Friday, April 3.

For tomorrow, Feb 25:

On a 3x5 notecard, write down 3 questions you have about the homework problems. We will discuss these questions first among a group of 3 and then as a class. These cards will be collected.

HL ONLY Food Chemistry Homework Problems

Due tomorrow (Feb. 25):
1- Sketch the chain structures of a monosaccharide that is an aldehyde and of a monosaccharide that is a ketone. Do these sugars actually exist in straight chain form in the aqueous solutions of the body?

2- Sketch the straight chain structures of the following monosaccharides:
a- glucose b- ribose c- ribulose d- galactose

3- What is a disaccharide? What monosaccharide units make up sucrose? What is the bond called that forms between disaccharides and what is a biproduct of this bond?

In addtion, answer the following (due Fri, Feb 27):
p. 1051

#100, #83, #85, #93, #94

Design Lab

Design Lab 1:
Investigate (quantitatively) a factor affecting the rate of a
reaction.

Dependent:
Change in concentration, volume of gas, intensity of colour, etc.

Design Lab 2:
Investigate a factor affecting the viscosity of a liquid.

Dependent:
Time taken to flow through a burette or pipette (or similar).

Please see IB Lab Rubric for specific instructions and stay tuned in class for more details.

Virtual Labs

All 4 labs are due on Friday, February 27, at the beginning of class and online at 11:59pm on Friday evening. Each lab will be a separate document but will be turned in as one packet. Each lab should contain the title and the purpose as listed in the lab instructions. The next section should be either the Data or Conclusion, depending on what is required. You will also need to include a works cited section and be sure to cite any sources you use in addition to the lab instructions.

I HIGHLY encourage you to look at the IB rubric BEFORE you write the report. Please pay careful attention to what you are being graded on.

Just kidding 5th period :-)

Today's "test" will not count. Friday you will take the real test. We will go over the answers tomorrow in class along with the practice problem posted on the website. You should also take a look at the suggested homework problems (posted on the board yesterday) p. 1048 # 62, 65-67. See you tomorrow.

O-Chem Help

If you need some additional resources for o-chem, the following website has helpful information on mechanisms and reactions:

http://www.chemhelper.com/mechanisms.html

To review for the test, we will be making a study guide in class which will summarize the reactions we have covered. These will include reactions with
1-Alkanes
a. radical substitution (know mech)
b. dehydrogenation
2-Alkenes
a. hydrogenation
b. addition of acids (H-X) and halogens (X2) [know mech]
c. polymer addition (to be covered tomorrow) [know mech]
3-Halogenoalkanes nucleophillic addition reactions
a. primary [SN2]
b. secondary [SN1 and SN2]
c. tertiary [SN1]
4-oxidation of alcohols [know reagents used]
a. primary --> aldehyde --> carboxylic acid
b. secondary --> ketone
c. tertiary --> no rxn
5-polymers (addition rxns of alkenes) to be covered tomorrow
a. margarine
b. ethene --> ethanol
c. plastics (PVC)

To get the most out of tomorrow, you should start going over your notes and categorizing the reactions under those 5 titles. Post any questions on the blog. You should be looking over these reactions nightly. This is organic chemistry, it's not supposed to be easy. Do not expect yourself to understand it and remember it if you only look at it in class. It will require time outside of class.

See you tomorrow,
Ms. Marostica

Semester Final Review

Hi Chemistry Lovers,
There will be a final review on Monday, January 19, at 10:30 am in room 11. There is no set format so come prepared with your questions. The review will be very productive for you if you have already completed the bulk of your studying. You should think of it as more of an opportunity to clarify specific misunderstandings. DO NOT come to the review if you haven't put in at least 2 hours of review on your own. We will end around 12:00. Have a productive weekend and I will see you on Monday. :-)

Ms. Marostica

P.S. Is this incredibly sunny gorgeous day torturing anyone else? Could it just rain so I could get some work done already!!
